What’s happening in your neighborhood

Xcel Energy will replace 2.4 miles of natural gas line along the northeastern portion of Sterling bordered by Pioneer Road to north, Highway 138 to the east, Jones Lane to the south, and Sterling Number 2 Ditch/Plainview Avenue to the West.

This is the first phase of the Sterling Natural Gas Project, a multi-year project in Sterling, Colorado. This work will allow us to continue to provide safe, reliable natural gas service, and enhance system resiliency during extreme weather. 

Schedule

Construction is anticipated to begin in April 2026 and will continue through fall/winter 2026.

Construction Impacts

During work, you may notice:

  • Marking of utility lines and utility survey holes
  • Road and sidewalk closures
  • Traffic control
  • Parking restrictions
  • Temporary changes to access
  • Construction noise

We install natural gas line by open trenching and boring.

  • Boring uses a specialized machine to create an underground pathway through which the natural gas line is pulled or drilled
  • Open trenching involves digging a trench and placing the natural gas line in the trench

Please alert traffic control if you need to access a location within a road, sidewalk or alley closure during construction.

We will restore work areas to conditions required by permits as weather allows. Work areas may be left temporarily restored after construction until we can complete final restoration.

A note from City of Sterling

The City of Sterling and Xcel Energy are continually coordinating to ensure that construction activities do not disrupt your regular trash service. To avoid active operations and heavy equipment, collection crews will begin their route in the Charmony construction zones neighborhood.

Please ensure your trash cans are at the curb by 7 a.m. on your regular pickup day to guarantee they aren’t missed.
